Missing The Mahatma – A Youth’s Plea

On 2nd October, 1869, a visionary was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, India – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. The man was one of the leaders of the Indian independence movement, and has established ideals and thoughts that are still followed not only in India, but around the world.

Every year, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti on his birthday in India, and the same day is also recognized as the International day of non-violence around the world. His gift to the world was ‘ahimsa‘ (non-violence) – the tool he used so effectively to help India and South Africa.

As India goes through various teething troubles, even after 70 years of independence, ridden with innumerable issues, here is an honest plea from a student, which probably mirrors the thoughts and feelings of the youth of today:

Dear Bapu, the father of our nation,

You have taught us,

Love, truth and co-operation,

It is but our obligation,

To offer you our salutation,

But just look at our present situation,

All over violence, hatred and corruption,

Terror, doubt, fear and inflation.

Come back once again,

Oh! Father of the nation,

It is a plea of this, our generation,

Give us back our liberation,

Accept our humble invitation,

To be once again, ‘THE FATHER OF OUR NATION’.
