Review: Is Thor Ragnarok The New Breed Of Superhero Movies?

The movie begins with a voice over (I kinda felt like Dexter over there), Thor is captured by some molten lava fire demon by the name of Surtur , then follows some cheap banter between them, something about prophecies, dreams, nightmares and a certain Ragnarok. Next minute, BOOM Thor defeats the demon and thinks he’s prevented the Ragnarok.

A couple of minutes into the movie you realize this isn’t any normal superhero movie. There’s a funny element to it right from word go (Deadpool anyone?)

Back at Asgard with the demon’s crown, Thor finds out a few things. Odin has left Asgard, Loki is still alive and Heimdall has gone missing. The two Odin sons then go to Earth to find their father and with a little help from Mystic Arts they locate him at none other than Norway!

That picturesque landscape is just too damn beautiful, I mean who wouldn’t want to die over there and that’s exactly what Odin does! Although he tells them about his first born Hela (Goddess of Death). Enters the evil sister Hela and the first thing she does is break Thor’s hammer (it does break into pieces). Then Hela moves towards Asgard while kicking her brothers out along the way.

Imprisoned in some part of the galaxy which resembles a scrap-yard, Thor must defeat the champion fighter who’s none other than the Incredible Hulk. Together with the help of Hulk, Valkyrie and some fighter by the name of Korg who wants to start a revolution, Thor manages to escape the planet, reach home and protect his people from Hela. Mind you, his team is actually called as The Revengers!

Directed by Taika Waititi (Green Lantern, Doctor Strange fame) and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo , Anthony Hopkins and others, Thor is a refreshing change in the Marvel Universe.

Good performances from all the actors especially Cate Blanchett as Hela (she’s 48 by the way and she looks absolutely stunning in the movie). Mark Ruffalo as Hulk is great and funny too, has Hulk finally calmed down and become funny?!

A great soundtrack which matches the theme of the movie, the action sequences and the overall mood of the movie. All that techno sound did remind me of Tron Legacy.
