Woman Gang-raped in Sernabatim Beach, Goa

Another shocking case of a gang-rape has taken place in Goa, this time on South Goa’s Sernabatim Beach. Here’s yet another example that questions the safety of both Indian and overseas tourists in Goa, which is known to be one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. This incident has taken place a while after three Indore men were arrested for the rape and murder of a 20-year old girl in Betalbatim.

This latest incident took place at Sernabatim, where once again, three men from Madhya Pradesh stripped and gang-raped a girl in her 20’s, in front of her boyfriend. Not just this. They also clicked photos of the couple, robbed them and warned them against going to the police for the same.

Stop rape

However, Goa police was swift in finding the three accused at separate places, and detaining them. Sanjiv Dhananjay Pal (23), Ram Santosh Bhariya (19) and Vishwas Makrana (23) were the three involved in this horrible act and all three already have criminal cases against them in the past, including that of sexual assault.

The incident took place at around 9:15 pm on the quiet beach of Sernabatim in South Goa, and it is said that the girl was from a nearby village. “All three accused have been arrested. Two accused Sanjiv Dhananjay Pal, 23, and Ram Santosh Bhariya, 19, both from Indore were arrested early on Saturday morning. The third accused Vishwas Makrana, 24, also from Indore was picked up from a railway station in South Goa later today,” said Arvind Gawas, South Goa superintendent of police.

An FIR was filed against the three at Colva police station under sections 376 (rape) and 394 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). While over 6 million tourists come to Goa in a year, the quality of tourists has been a huge question over the last few months, with Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai recently courting controversy after calling a majority of the domestic tourists ‘scum of the earth’.

While Goa is an amazing place to go to for a holiday, tourists should know that it is not a ‘Sin City’ and that there are certain rules to be followed in the state, as there are in every other place across the country. Strict action must be taken against the three criminals from Indore, to set an example to those who think that everything is forgiven in Goa.
