Chris Gayle’s 73(22) Gives Balkh Legends Smashing Win

Scrolling through my social media feed recently, I saw a lot of comments regarding Christopher Henry Gayle and how he should probably consider retirement at the age of 39 years that he is right now. No performances since a while, no interest on the field, etc, etc. However, how many of you have been following the 2018 Afghanistan Premier League?

Talking about the most recent results, the Balkh Legends have won their last two games thanks to two consecutive 50+ scores from none other than the Universe Boss Chris Gayle himself. Two games, two wins, two Man of the Match awards for Gayle, and the Legends have found themselves a semi-final spot which they will contest later today.

On 14th October, he produced a brilliant innings of 80(48) to help Legends score 244/6 against Kabul Zwanan. The Legends won by 21 runs and that one good innings wasn’t enough for Gayle, who went on a blitzkrieg, scoring 73 in just 22 deliveries and helping his franchise beat Kandahar Knights yesterday, 18th October, chasing 142 in just 17.5 overs.

His 73 in 22 deliveries included 5 fours and 8 sixes, which means 68 runs only in boundaries. That’s a whopping 93.15% of his runs scored only in boundaries! Remember, Gayle brought up his fifty in just 16 deliveries! One bowler who he took to the cleaners in particular was Karim Sadiq, Afghanistan batsman who opened the bowling with his off-breaks and got taken for 37 runs in just 2 overs.

However, it was his Afghan countryman itself, Karim Janat, who picked up Gayle’s wicket, ended with lovely T20 figures of 4-0-16-1, while all the other bowlers took a beating. Kandahar Knights then became the only team to be eliminated from the competition, as the other four play the semi-finals.

“The ball was coming onto the bat and I played my shots. I want more people to come to the ground tomorrow for the semi-final,” said Gayle when he went out to collect his MOM trophy. Where are all those people who said Gayle should retire now? I can’t wait to watch him playing in the semi-final and hopefully the final too. Keep watching this space for more updates on Chris Gayle and the Afghanistan Premier League.
