Fabian Allen Stars in West Indies B Victory

The West Indies Cricket Board sent a B-team out to Canada to play in the inaugural Global T20 Canada cricket league, and this was the weakest team on paper, as all the other teams had international signings, with big names like Shahid Afridi, Chris Gayle, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons, Steve Smith, David Warner and others to say the least.

However, that B-team is on top of the points table thus far, being the only team to have two wins so far. Last night was their second consecutive victorious outing, beating the Edmonton Royals at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City. They won the toss, bowled first and did brilliantly to restrict the Royals to just 155, with many big hitters in their side including Ronchi, Behardien, Afridi and others.

Irish all-rounder Kevin O’Brien did the big hitting towards the end, playing a beautiful cameo of 49(17) which got them to a respectable total. Obed McCoy from the Windies B-team caught the eyes of many in the first game with some good, disciplined lines and lengths being dished out. He improved on that first game by finishing with brilliant figures of 4/22 in this game and was a major contributor to his team’s success yesterday.

All that his team then needed to do was go out and sensibly chase down this score, which wasn’t impossible. However, they were up against world class bowlers like Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Irfan, Wayne Parnell, Afridi, and the young Hasan Khan. They struck early and hurt the West Indies B-team. Fall of wickets:

  • 21/1
  • 36/2
  • 54/3
  • 55/4
  • 56/5
  • 66/6

As you can see, 66/6 in 10 overs meant chasing 156 becomes nearly impossible. In walks a certain Fabian Allen who came in and changed the course of the game completely. He came into this tournament with the intention of making everyone aware of the name ‘Fabian Allen’. The 23-year old spoke to Read Scoops before the tournament and said, “My plan is to express myself so people can see who Fabian Allen is. It’s always a great feeling to play at high levels, where I can learn from the best to improve my skills.” Read that full piece here.

He played what turned out to be a match-winning innings for his team, smashing an unbeaten 75 in just 30 balls and taking his side to victory. He came in to bat when all hope was gone and manufactured some hope, and eventually won them the game. His innings included 4 fours and an unbelievable 8 sixes. He clearly is one to watch out for in this tournament. Probably one who may don the jersey of the Windies senior team as well. Man of the Match: Fabian Allen
