CPL 2019 Match 3 – TKR vs JT Fantasy Preview

The 2019 Caribbean Premier League has kicked off in style and after a couple of games, we now have Match 3 between Trinbago Knights Riders and Jamaica Tallawahs. While Tallawahs were the original threat of the CPL, their threat has died down over the years, with TKR taking over as the clear best team. In CPL 2019 too, they began with a win even though they weren’t able to field their best team.

They beat Patriots in the opening game by 11 runs while Tallawahs are playing their first game of the season. Tallawahs finished 3rd on the CPL 2018 points table before losing the eliminator in the playoffs to St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. They will look to take it a step further in CPL 2019.  Keep reading for our complete Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy preview of the TKR vs JT game…

Numbers

  • Tallawahs had 6 wins in 10 games in CPL 2018, losing the Eliminator.
  • Head to head in last 5 games, Jamaica Tallawahs leads 3-2.
  • Chris Gayle – 2,111 runs in 66 games in CPL history.
  • Glenn Phillips – 3 fifties, 1 century in last 4 FC games for Auckland.
  • Oshane Thomas – 18 wickets in 10 games in CPL 2018.

Trinbago Knight Riders

Firstly, let’s talk about the injury list. The Bravo brothers are still recovering from injury which means Kieron Pollard will continue to lead the team. It’s not a bad idea to pick him because he had a couple of good outings in the recent T20 series against India. He scored 47(32) in the last game and top scored for his side. Another all-rounder who can’t be missed is James Neesham, fresh off a fantastic CWC 2019.

From almost retiring to being one of their best performers in the WC, Neesham has come a long way and he was the MOM in the first game with 33 runs and 3/18 with the ball in less than 3 overs bowled. Colin Munro will miss another 2 games and I’ll pick his replacement Lendl Simmons who failed with the bat in the last game (11). With 11 fifties in 60 CPL games, he is the third highest run scorer in this tournament. The new found All-rounder Seekkuge Prasanna could be the x-factor player.

Jamaica Tallawahs

The Universe Boss is someone who you can’t drop as it’s a big gamble to drop Chris Gayle, who is the leading run-scorer in the CPL history. However, there are other batting options than can be considered in this team, one being Kiwi wicket-keeper batsman Glenn Phillips who is coming into this tournament with some amazing form. He had a good season in CPL 2018 too, with 457 runs in 11 games including a century and 2 fifties.

Another person I would want to be in my Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team is Oshane Thomas, a young fast bowler who is slowly making a name for himself in T20 leagues across the world. Remember, he was the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament last year. Andre Russell is easily one of the best all-rounders in the world and not picking him would be a sin. If playing one on one, you will also have to pick him as captain or vice-captain. X-factor player – Rovman Powell.
