CWC 2019 Match 18 – India vs New Zealand Fantasy Preview

Here’s a contest no one wants to miss out on watching. One of the favourites of this tournament is India and they have won 2 games in out of 2 so far in the ICC 2019 World Cup. Now, they face New Zealand in Match 18 of the tournament, a team that has been very consistent in the past editions of the CWC, and have also enjoyed a good record against India. Both teams are unbeaten with the Kiwis having 3 wins in 3 games.

A win here for New Zealand will strengthen their position at the top of the table while India will catapult to the top if they manage to get past this familiar foe. 3 games have been played at Trent Bridge so far in CWC 2019 with two of them being won by the team batting first, and it also seems to be a high-scoring one, with assistance to the pacers. Stats

  • India have won 3 of their 6 previous ODIs here.
  • New Zealand have won 2 of their 7 previous ODIs here.
  • Average 1st innings total here – 252 runs.
  • Rohit Sharma scored 137* in his only previous ODI here.
  • Kuldeep Yadav has good memories in his only ODI here – 6/25.

India

Biggest news for India is that they will have to disrupt their winning combination due to the hairline fracture received by Shikhar Dhawan. Rishab Pant has been kept on standby and India will most likely replace him with Dinesh Karthik. KL Rahul will take up the opening slot and there will be pressure on him as India have relied on their opening partnership in previous games. Pick Rohit Sharma for sure as he has a century here in the past and his ton in the opening game is a reminder that he’s in good form.

Yuzvendra Chahal has been the leader with the ball for Team India, picking up 6 wickets in 2 games, while Jasprit Bumrah has picked up from where he left off at IPL 2019, with 5 scalps so far. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the surprise package so far with 5 wickets in 2 games too. However, the weak link will be Kuldeep Yadav, who has been expensive and only managed 1 wicket. Can he pick up some confidence from his 5-fer against England here? Or will India drop him for Mohd Shami?

New Zealand

Tom Latham has done very well against India in the past but that #5 slot isn’t doing too good on him. He has scores of DNB, 0, 13* at that position and it may make sense to bring him up the order. Ross Taylor has been in good form in recent times being the second highest run scorer behind Virat Kohli since CWC 2015. He has 130 runs in 2 innings in CWC 2019 and is a reliable pick. Captain Kane Williamson also has 119 runs in 2 innings.

NZ have a slight dilemma with the ball, with Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry both doing well so far, picking up 8 and 7 wickets respectively. Ideally, they would keep their places even though Tim Southee is now fit, but with Southee dismissing Virat 5 times in ODIs, can we see a surprising inclusion? If they play, I’d like to have both of Henry and Ferguson in my CricMoney (sign-up to get Rs.25 FREE) fantasy team.
