Second game of today’s Saturday double header and while the Afghanistan vs Pakistan game is set to be a one-sided contest, Match 37 of the ICC 2019 World Cup will leave you biting your nails as it’s a contest between the Western hemisphere neighbours and cricketing rivals, New Zealand vs Australia. Both teams are sitting in the to half of the table with Australia becoming the first and only team to book a semi-final berth so far.
Australia is at the top of the table with 6 wins in 7 games while New Zealand have 5 wins in 7 games, losing one to Pakistan in their last game and having one washed out to rain. A win for NZ will see them qualifying to the semi-finals as well and remember, December 2016 was the last time AUS beat NZ in an ODI game. - Tournament: 2019 ICC World Cup.
- Date: 29th June 2019, 6:00pm IST
- Venue: Lord’s, London.
- Capacity: 30,000+
- Series status: Match 37 of the round robin stage.
Form (recent first)
- NZ: L W W W W
- AUS: W W W W L
- 2 CWC 2019 matches here and both have been won batting first.
- Australia has won 13 of their 21 previous ODIs here.
- New Zealand has won 3 of their 3 previous ODIs here.
- Jason Behrendorff – 5/44 in his only previous ODI here.
- David Warner – 500 runs in 7 ODIs in CWC 2019.
- Aaron Finch – 496 runs in 7 ODIs in CWC 2019.
While New Zealand has had a flawless campaign so far, it has been a horrid tournament for their openers Colin Munro and Martin Guptill, with 125 and 137 runs respectively in 6 ODIs and just a single fifty each in the opening game. That’s the difference between these two sides so far. However, Guptill has looked good in the field and isn’t low on confidence so it’s only a matter of time before he see him explode. He has a century and 4 fifties against Australia in the past.
Trent Boult is a must-have in your team as this pacer has 9 wickets in 6 games but is slowly finding his rhythm in CWC 2019 and remember, he has 25 wickets in just 10 career ODIs vs Australia. Pick him for sure while the leader for NZ this tournament is Lockie Ferguson with 15 wickets, so you can pick him as well. After 7 wickets in his first 2 games in the tournament, Matt Henry now has only 1 wicket in the last 4 which means we may see Tim Southee or Ish Sodhi being brought in as a replacement.
If Boult is key for New Zealand, then his opposite number left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc is key for Australia. Highest wicket-taker in CWC 2015 and so far, highest in CWC 2019 with 19 wickets in 7 ODIs and his career record against New Zealand isn’t too bad either – 18 wickets in 8 ODIs. Pick him and Jason Behrendorff as your pacers. After a decent start to the tournament, Pat Cummins has only managed 1 wicket in his last 2 games, so I’ll skip him.
While Aaron Finch has had a great tournament so far, Finchy hasn’t had the best of numbers against New Zealand and left-arm pacers. Pick his opening partner David Warner who is the tournament leader and averages 48+ against New Zealand in ODIs. Steve Smith can also be added to your Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks as he also averages 49+ against the Kiwis in ODIs, with 1 century and 2 fifties in 10 ODIs.
