CWC 2019 Match 39 – Sri Lanka vs West Indies Fantasy Preview

It’s a battle between two down and out teams at the ICC 2019 World Cup as Sri Lanka play West Indies in Match 39 of the tournament. Both teams have lost enough to eliminate themselves from the tournament but there’s still a lot to play forward, including looking forward to the 2023 World Cup right from this point. We expect Sri Lanka to try out a few different team combinations today while Windies might play the same team.

Both being previous world champions, these two teams fizzled off in CWC 2019, showing potential at some stages but choking when required to keep their composure. West Indies have only managed 1 win in 7 games while Sri Lanka have managed 2, but the former looks like a stronger team to me. Stats

  • One CWC 2019 game at this ground – SA chased 204 with 9 wickets to spare.
  • Sri Lanka have won 2 of their 3 previous ODIs here.
  • Windies have lost both their previous ODIs here.
  • Last 6 ODIs head to head, Sri Lanka lead 5-1.
  • Suranga Lakmal has 10 wickets in 5 career ODIs vs West Indies.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has struggled to find some inspiration with the ball, which has been their biggest worrying factor so far. Lasith Malinga has picked up 9 wickets in 5 ODIs in CWC 2019 but no other bowler has managed more than 5 wickets this tournament. A good record against West Indies means I’ll be picking Suranga Lakmal as my other front-line Sri Lankan bowler and while Isuru Udana hasn’t had the best tournament so far, he is worth picking as he’s handy with the bat too.

The openers have been their biggest run-getters so far, with Kusal Perera getting 191 runs and Dimuth Karunaratne scoring 180 runs, both scoring 2 fifties each. I’ll pick the captain Karunaratne as Perera comes under the wicket-keeper category and we have two talented wicket-keepers in the Windies camp too. Pick Avishka Fernando instead as the youngster has impressed in two short innings of 49 and 30 so far. We’re also expecting Milinda Siriwardana to get a game.

West Indies

If your fantasy league allows, pick both wicket-keeper Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran, who have scored 192 and 191 runs respectively in CWC 2019. If you’re allowed only 1, pick Pooran instead and go for Shimron Hetmyer as another option with the bat as he also has 189 runs this tournament. It won’t be a bad idea to pick Chris Gayle too, who has scored 200 runs this tournament but is due a big knock for his side, especially since he has made himself available for selection post the World Cup too.

Captain Jason Holder is a must-have in your fantasy team. He has 99 runs and 6 wickets in the tournament and his 2/33 against India was an absolutely amazing performance, so I’ll be including him in my Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks today. Also, Sheldon Cottrell is their leading wicket-taker with 11 scalps, so don’t forget about this guy. His short ball will be tough to handle.
