CWC 2019 Match 42 – Afghanistan vs West Indies Fantasy Preview

It has been a horrible outing for both these teams at the ICC 2019 World Cup with Afghanistan not managing a single victory in their 8 games so far in England. On the other hand, West Indies have been inspirational and come close to winning so many games, but eventually only logged down 1 win in 8 games, one that came in their opening game against Pakistan.

Now, these two teams lie at the bottom of the table and what’s interesting is that these are the same two teams who made it through the ICC World Cup Qualifiers. It was Afghanistan vs Windies in that tournament final too, where the former completed an unlikely victory but both qualified nonetheless. Stats

  • 2 CWC 2019 games here – 1 win batting first, 1 win batting second.
  • Afghanistan has lost their only previous ODI at this ground.
  • West Indies has won 2 of their 5 ODIs at this ground.
  • In last 5 ODIs head to head, Afghanistan lead 3-1.
  • Rashid Khan – 12 wickets in 5 ODIs vs West Indies.

Afghanistan

The Afghani hero Rashid Khan has 5 wickets in 8 games in CWC 2019 and has also been expensive so while he has a good record against Windies, I’ll be dropping him for someone who costs fewer credits. Mujeeb Rahman could be that option with 7 wickets in 6 games including 5 of them coming in just the last 2 games. Pacer Hamid Hassan is injured and will be out for this clash so don’t pick him by mistake.

With the bat, I must recommend Rahmat Shah. Easily the best batsman in the Afghani set up, Shah has proved himself again in CWC 2019 with 192 runs and has also been thrown the ball a couple of times. Another must-have in your fantasy team is captain Gulbadin Naib who has contributed to the team consistently regardless of when he bats or bowls. Even though he failed in the last game, he has a total of 189 runs and 9 wickets this tournament.

West Indies

By the looks of it, West Indies are set to play another unchanged side with the probable exception of bringing in Kemar Roach for Shannon Gabriel, the former having completed training recently. I believe Afghanistan may find it difficult to deal with the pace and bounce of the Windies bowlers so I’ll add all of Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas and Jason Holder to my fantasy team, with 12, 8 and 8 wickets respectively in CWC 2019.

I mentioned how Nicholas Pooran was the player to watch out for in the last game and he delivered for me with a century after I made him captain. While he still is a part of all my Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks, I can’t select him as my team captain again. Instead, I’ll back Chris Gayle to sign off from the Cricket World Cup with a bang. So far, he has managed 235 runs in 8 games. Fabian Allen could be your x-factor player.
