It hasn’t been a great ICC 2019 World Cup for Sri Lanka, a team that has usually always done well in ICC tournaments. They only have 3 wins on 8 games and are knocked out of the tournament, with nothing but pride to play for. However, their next game poses a big challenge as they take on India, who has 6 wins in 8 games and are looking for a finish at #1 on the CWC 2019 points table.
If you look at the two teams on paper, Sri Lanka is clearly the weaker of the two sides, but the have nothing to lose here so can play fearless cricket. Three previous games at this ground in CWC 2019 and 2 of them were won batting first, with the third coming batting second in a close finish. - India has won 3 of their 9 previous ODIs here.
- Sri Lanka has won 3 of their 6 previous ODIs here.
- Lasith Malinga – 9 wickets in just 3 previous ODIs here.
- Angelo Mathews – 131 runs in 2 ODIs here; yet to be dismissed.
- Last 14 ODIs head to head, India lead 12-2.
- Thisara Perera has dismissed MS Dhoni 6 times in 12 ODI innings.
Sri Lanka is expected to play a similar team as they did in the last game with one possible change being bringing he experienced Thisara Perera back into the side. Experience is almost always key and that’s why I’d also recommend Lasith Malinga especially since he has done well on this ground in the past as well. However, choose wisely as he hasn’t always been his best against India, picking up only 43 wickets in 39 ODIs against their neighbours.
It’ll be interesting to see how Avishka Fernando goes against India. He has been delightful to watch so far with scores of 49, 30, and a brilliant century in the last game. However, I’d prefer experience over youth against a bowling attack like India’s and would rather go in for Lahiru Thirimanne, who has done well against India in the past.
With all the criticism regarding MS Dhoni’s form and inability to finish off games for India, I expect him to hit back hard today against the familiar foes, Sri Lanka. India is expected to fool around with their bowling order as well and we have reason to believe Chahal could be rested for Ravindra Jadeja, who is yet to get a game in the 2019 World Cup.
Two of India’s most consistent players in CWC 2019 so far have been the top order batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with the former smashing 5 fifties and the latter a record four centuries so far, with at least 2 games still in hand in this tournament, so include them both in your Nostragamus (sign-up with “READSCOOPS” for Rs.100 FREE) fantasy picks.
