IPL 2019 Match 15 – MI vs CSK Fantasy Preview

Here we are. Probably the strongest team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians, takes on the most consistent team in the history of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings. IPL 2019 has begun very decently for Chennai so far, having won all three of their games so far, and sitting pretty at the top of the IPL 2019 points table.

We can’t say the same for Mumbai though, as they have had another slow start to this tournament, as we have seen over the years. They have 1 win in their 3 games thus far and are in the bottom half of the table, but playing at home in Mumbai might help their cause here. The only previous game at Wankhede this year saw MI losing to Delhi, with the latter scoring 213/6 batting first. IPL 2019 Match 15 - MI vs CSK fantasy preview

Form (recent first)

  • MI: L W L
  • CSK: W W W

Stats

  • Yuvraj Singh has a 40.7% dot ball percentage in IPL middle overs.
  • Jason Benhrendorff has an economy of only 6.2 in T20 powerplay overs.
  • In the last 5 encounters between them, MI lead CSK 4-1.
  • Overall head to head, Mumbai leads 13-11.
  • Deepak Chahar’s economy rate this season is 4.66, with 39 of 72 balls delivered being dots.

Mumbai

Somewhere Mumbai Indians has been lacking is big scores at the top of the innings. Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma have hit a few 50-run stands but they have only scored 110 and 93 runs in IPL 2019 so far, while Yuvraj Singh has 94 runs in 3 games. Evin Lewis is an option that could be tried as he would boost scoring during the powerplay overs, but it’s unlikely MI will try him in place of QdK for now, especially since the latter is also a wicket keeper.

I always suggest picking both Pandya brothers, but Krunal Pandya has been expensive so far this year, while Hardik Pandya has a point to prove, so I’ll pick the latter. Kieron Pollard has scores of 21, 5 and 7 in this tournament thus far and hasn’t even bowled a single over, so he is a wasted all-rounder spot. Mumbai might consider bringing in Ben Cutting for him while Jason Behrendorff has also arrived from national duties; he could replace Mitchell McClenaghan, who is struggling to pick wickets.

Chennai

Chennai has suffered from the same issues – top order failures. Ambati Rayudu has scored 28, 5 and 1 so far in IPL 2019, while Shane Watson has 0, 44 and 13. MS Dhoni in the middle order is their highest scorer this season with 107 runs so far, and I could very easily see Faf du Plessis being brought in as an extra top-order option, in place of Watson or Mitchell Santner.

However, Dhoni’s love for maintaining a winning combination might mean an unchanged playing eleven. Imran Tahir has picked up 6 wickets in 3 games so far and has been miserly with his economy rate, so this is someone I could even consider making my vice-captain, as I’d use the captain slot for an all-rounder. Also, don’t forget to pick Deepak Chahar who only has 3 wickets in 3 games but his impressive swing bowling deserves many more wickets in games to come.
