MSL 2019 Match 4 – NMG vs JOZ Fantasy Preview

The 2019 Mzansi Super League will see defending champions Jozi Stars in action once again today. Stars won the MSL 2018 final with ease and this will be their second game of the MSL 2019 season, having also played the opening fixture against Cape Town Blitz where they fell short by 15 runs. Now, they play Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, the latter’s first game of the season here at Port Elizabeth.

The Giants missed out last year having finished 4th on the points table with 4 wins in 10 games. Today, we have two games scheduled and this will be the second of the double header, after Paarl Rocks and Cape Town Blitz who play in Match 3 of MSL 2019. Numbers

  • Head to head in this tournament, these teams are tied 1-1.
  • Matthew Breetzke last 3 FC games scores – 51, 80, 59.
  • JJ Smuts – 280 runs and 12 wickets in last 4 FC games for Warriors.
  • Dane Paterson in the last 4 FC games – 18 wickets.

Nelson Mandela Giants

The overseas stars for Nelson Mandela Giants are England’s Jason Roy and Australian wicket-keeper batsman Ben Dunk. While Roy is a must-pick, Dunk last got a 50+ score in February this year back in the Big Bash 2018/19 season. Instead, I’d pick my wicket-keeper batsman in young Matthew Breetzke who is coming off three consecutive fifties for Warriors and also has a fifty and century for SA Emerging Team in July.

While he’s not a big international name, JJ Smuts has been a consistent performer and he’s a brilliant pick for captain or vice-captain, also scoring 200+ runs in MSL 2018, along with 7 wickets in 9 games. Another vital contributor with bat and ball will be Chris Morris who has been consistently among the wickets in recent months. Farhaan Behardien scored 2 consecutive FC centuries for Titans last month and is even more lethal in this T20 format.

Jozi Stars

Match 1 of MSL 2019 saw Jozi Stars falling short by 15 runs in pursuit of 214. Probably one of the most consistent domestic batsmen in SA, Reeza Hendricks continued his run-scoring with 80(53) in the opening game. Australian all-rounder Daniel Christian will play a big role in this tournament, given all his experience in T20 leagues across the world. He scored 13(12)* and picked 1/28 in the opening game of MSL 2019.

Another player who will be vital is Rassie van der Dussen who has remained extremely consistent over the last one year, scoring 31(21) in the last game. Kagiso Rabada will be over-picked in fantasy leagues, so I’ll skip him and add Dane Paterson to my Fantain (Use Code “READ123”) fantasy team as well. Paterson picked one wicket in the last game and had a best of 7/91 for Cape Cobras in an FC games last month.
