We have a South Group fixture here at the 2019 T20 Blast and both teams haven’t played upto potential this year. Surrey has only managed 4 wins in 12 games and are languishing near the bottom of the points table. The team now hosts Somerset who also hasn’t been fantastic but has managed to be in the top half of the table with 6 wins in 12 games.
Not considering washed out games, Somerset has won 4 of their last 5 games while Surrey is also on a winning streak of 3 games after a pathetic start to the 2019 Vitality T20 Blast. Surrey couldn’t defend 200+ in the reverse fixture and will need to tighten up their bowling. Keep reading for our complete Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy preview of the SUR vs SOM game…

Form (recent first)
- SUR: W W W L L
- SOM: W L W W W
- Somerset won the reverse fixture by 8 wickets, chasing 200+.
- 5 CWC 2019 games here recently and 4 were won batting first.
- Head to head in all T20s, Surrey leads 9-5. 2 were abandoned.
- Babar Azam – 541 runs in 11 games this season.
- Tom Curran – 17 wickets in 10 games this season.
The elder Curran brother, Tom Curran is not in the squad today so don’t pick him even though he’s their leading wicket-taker this season. Instead, pick Sam Curran who will be available for this game, before the start of the 4th Ashes Test. Sam only has 3 wickets in his 6 games at the 2019 Vitality Blast. However, he has been used as a floater in the batting order, with 2 fifties so far including a forty and a thirty.
Imran Tahir is an automatic pick because of a wonderful IPL 2019 he had, followed by a great CWC 2019 and now, he has 15 wickets in 11 wickets this season. Not a part of the Ashes squad, Aaron Finch has been doing a good job as captain of Surrey, being their leading run-scorer with 284 runs so far. Pick him and the youngster Ollie Pope who is very close behind with 260 runs in his 10 games this season.
The first two batsmen on this year’s tournament run charts are from Somerset and you have to pick both because of the amazing consistency. Babar Azam has scored several hundreds since landing in UK even before CWC 2019 and here too, he has 541 runs including 4 fifties and a century. Close behind him is Tom Banton who has 440 runs including 3 fifties and a century. These two have been the foundation of the batting order.
Edward Byrom is worth a pick in your Howzat (sign-up with code “READ1234”) fantasy team if you wish to drop one of the above. He scored a fifty in his debut this season soon followed by a score of 44 but hasn’t scored much ever since, so won’t be a popular fantasy pick. Jerome Taylor is their leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 11 games. Pick him and the leg-spinner Max Waller, who isn’t far behind with 13 wickets this season.
