Zimbabwe vs UAE – 1st ODI Fantasy Preview

Starting here, Zimbabwe will host United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 4 ODIs between 10-16 April 2019, wherein all proceeds from the 3rd ODI will go towards the Cyclone Idai relief efforts; the cyclone hit Zimbabwe last month. Both countries have a similar standing in world cricket, but the hosts have much, much more experience. They’ve created a few players that are regular travellers, playing in tournaments and T20 leagues around the world.

As for UAE, they aren’t as experienced and they are inconsistent, both because of the fact that they don’t get as much exposure at the international level. The two countries have been playing each other in a few first-class games in recent weeks, but we’re set for the 1st ODI now in Harare. Zimbabwe are clear favourites to win this one and you can read our complete PlayerzPot (Use Code “READ1234”) fantasy preview of this game here…

Stats

  • Zimbabwe have lost 10 of their last 13 ODIs at this ground.
  • UAE have won both of their 2 ODIs at this ground.
  • 350/6 is the highest score here – Australia, Aug 2014.
  • Taylor (2,067) and Masakadza (1,892) are the top run scorers here.
  • Head to head, these two teams are tied in ODIs, 1-1.

Zimbabwe

The hosts will be playing the series without Brendan Taylor and Hamilton Masakadza due to injuries, both of who are among the most experienced Zimbabwean cricketers. Another former captain Graeme Cremer will not be playing as he has put his career temporarily on ‘hold’ due to family commitments. Worse still, he is assistant coach of the UAE team. Will his experience help the UAE spinners? Regardless, remember NOT to pick them.

Leading the wicket-takers list at this ground from current squad players is Chris Mpofu, with 32 wickets in 27 games. With the lack of experience in this squad, we’re expecting Mpofu to stand up, along with Kyle Jarvis; the latter having a lot of experience from county cricket in England. Sikandar Raza happens to be one of my favourite cricketers, and I consider him one of the better all-rounders in the world. He’s my captain for the day while Sean Williams scored a century in Zimbabwe’s last ODI; pick him too.

UAE

Ashfaq Ahmed scored 131 runs in 144 balls in the warm up game and this guy makes my fantasy team for the 1st ODI. Next, we have Chirag Suri who scored a duck in that warm up but he is one of UAE’s most talented cricketers, his stint with Gujarat Lions making him the only player from the country to have featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL). We’re not 100% sure of squads, so select those who will be sure starters.

These starters include captains. Mohammad Naveed is the UAE captain while Peter Moor will captain Zimbabwe for the first time. Naveed bowls at skiddy speeds and he could hurt the Zimbabwean top order. Former captain Rohan Mustafa makes his return to the UAE side and he return will boost the side. His all-round abilities make him my vice-captain for this 1st ODI in Harare.
