McDermott to Cover For Injured Shaun Marsh

Australia has roped in Ben McDermott as a cover to the injured Shaun Marsh for the remainder of the ongoing ODI series against South Africa. According to Cricket Australia, Marsh was ruled out of 1st ODI of the 3-match series with an abscess in his buttock region that will require minor surgery and will be assessed before the 2nd ODI which is scheduled to be played on Friday.

McDermott is in line to make his ODI debut for Australia in the 2nd ODI at the Adelaide Oval if Shaun Marsh fails to prove his fitness for the game. Meanwhile, the Australian chief selector has pressed on the fact that Shaun Marsh will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness.

“The National Selection Panel has decided to add Ben McDermott to the ODI squad ahead of Friday’s match against South Africa at the Adelaide Oval,” said National Selector, Trevor Hohns.

“Part of the decision to include Ben is to ensure we have appropriate coverage should Shaun Marsh fail to recover in time for Friday’s second ODI. We will continue to monitor Shaun’s progress and give him every opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the match,” added Hohns. McDermott amassed 427 runs at an average of 71.16 and was the second highest run-scorer in the recent JLT One-Day Cup 2018 behind Chris Lynn. He hit centuries against Queensland and South Australia during the 2018 tournament to come into the limelight.

He made his international debut for Australia in the recent tour of UAE during which he played 4 T20Is. He scored an unbeaten 10* against UAE before registering scores of 0, 3 and 21 against Pakistan. Coincidentally, Ben McDermott was dismissed run-out in all the three T20Is against Pakistan!

Visitors South Africa won the 1st ODI by a big margin of 6 wickets at the Perth Stadium two days ago (Nov 04). The 2nd ODI of the series will be played at the Adelaide Oval on Friday (Nov 09) and the third and final ODI of the series in Hobart on Sunday (Nov 11).
