New Zealand vs Bangladesh – 1st Test Fantasy Preview

We’re a couple of weeks into the 2019 Bangladesh tour of New Zealand and much like the last time they toured this part of the world, Bangladesh is yet to taste success on this tour, having lost the ODI series 3-0. Now comes the bigger challenge, with a series of 3 Tests, the 1st Test beginning at Hamilton.

History suggests that it’s going to be yet another bad outing for Bangladesh especially since they are playing without a few highly experienced players. However, the 411 they scored in the drawn warm-up game would be a confidence booster. For all you fantasy cricket buffs, keep reading for our fantasy preview of the 1st Test…

New Zealand vs Bangladesh 1st Test fantasy preview

Form (recent first)

  • New Zealand: W D W L W
  • Bangladesh: W W W L L

Stats

  • New Zealand have won 4 of their last 5 Tests here (one draw), last losing one in 2012 against South Africa.
  • Bangladesh have lost both their previous Tests here.
  • 563/10 is the highest team score here. New Zealand also scored 553/7 (second highest) against Bangladesh in 2010.
  • Ross Taylor has an incredible 904 runs in 10 Tests here (highest), including 5 hundreds and 1 fifty.
  • Tim Southee is the highest wicket taker here – 38 wickets in 7 Tests.

New Zealand

Well, the hosts have been impeccable at home, and here’s a chance to add some more wins to their trophy cabinet. Trent Boult has been on fire and he gets even better in the Test scenario, but since he’s going to be a part of 95% fantasy teams, I’m leaving him out for Neil Wagner and Tim Southee, with the former being a Test specialist and the latter seeming to love this ground, having scored 244 runs here in addition to 38 wickets.

Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson are both going to be popular picks, but the former is surely going to be my captain for this game. He has an outstanding record at this ground and his current form is better than outstanding. Williamson also has 600+ runs at this ground and he could be selected as a normal player, but since he didn’t have the best ODI series, I could also suggest a gamble in leaving him out for opener Tom Latham or middle order batsman Henry Nicholls.

Bangladesh

Mahmudullah scored his maiden Test century way back in 2010 against New Zealand at this ground, and now he has the chance to get another one here, 9 years later, this time as captain. He will be taking over the reins as Mushfiqur Rahim is injured, joining Shakib al Hasan on the sidelines. I’ll be picking Mahmudullah but it’ll be interesting to see how the batting performs without their two mainstays.

Liton Das, Shadman Islam, Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan are the four players who scored fifties in the warm-up game. Hasan is also going to be the only spinner in the side which is set to play a 3-pacer attack (Mustafizur Rahman, Khaled Ahmed, Abu Jayed) so he’s in my fantasy side for sure. Being the only spinner, he’s going to have a healthy workload. There will be added responsibility on Tamim Iqbal while Mohammad Mithun had a good ODI series, so he could make a good pick going on current form.
