Paine, Finch Named Australia’s Limited Overs Captains

In the aftermath of the ugly ball tampering saga during South Africa’s recent tour of Australia, wicket-keeper batsman Tim Paine has been appointed as Australia’s captain for the ODI series against England, while opening batsman Aaron Finch has been appointed as the T20I captain.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (8th May) by the Australia National Cricket Board, Cricket Australia (CA). Both will take charge in the Australia’s limited over tour of England which takes place next month. Paine will lead the ODI side with Finch taking up the vice-captaincy role!

CA chief selector, Trevor Hohns, confirmed that the responsibility for Tim Paine is temporary and not permanent. He also said a decision will be made in due course of time. “Tim is a strong leader and will captain the side for this series, supported by Aaron. A decision on a permanent one-day captain will be made in due course”, said Trevor Hohns.

Though Paine’s position is temporary, Aaron Finch will lead Australia’s T20I side in the one-off game against England and the following T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe which involves Pakistan as the third team. Australia have named their 15-man ODI squad and 14-man T20I squad for their tour of England. Injured pacers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins along with Mitchell Marsh are sidelined for this limited overs tour.

Nathan Lyon who had tasted success in the Big Bash League earlier in December-January has been recalled to the ODI squad while his name is missing from the T20I squad! Lyon last featured for Australia in a limited overs game in August 2016. He, definitely, does not want to spoil this opportunity and will look to make most of this.
