Shane Watson Gives CSK Third IPL Title

What a happy day for CSK fans and Dhoni fans around India. Chennai Super Kings have been crowned the IPL 2018 champions!

Shane Watson lit up the IPL with a blistering knock of 106(57) against Rajasthan Royals earlier in the season and then had a few quiet games, with Chennai also resting him a couple of games back, with slight injury issues. He wasn’t even used with the ball much in the last few games and I must say, CSK managed him very well, with the Aussie international saving the best for last.

The 36-year old was out on a mission as Chennai were set a target of 179 by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2018 final. He started his innings a little slow, in fact too slow. His first ten balls – 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0. Then, he shifts gears and brings up a 33-ball fifty, in an innings where he wasn’t able to walk straight for most of it.

Every century is special for a cricketer and a century in the final of such a huge tournament is extremely special, bringing up a 51-ball century and taking Chennai Super Kings to their third ever IPL title, becoming only the second team to do so after Mumbai Indians. It was truly a special knock from the former Aussie international, who became the fourth person to have scored two centuries in a single season of the IPL.

CSK didn’t win this game but they absolutely crushed their opponents, cruising to an 8-wicket win thanks to this magnificent innings from Shane Watson. Hats off Watto! He brought the true meaning of ‘stand and deliver’ today, as taking singles became very difficult for him after a while.

Truly a brilliant homecoming for Chennai Super Kings, coming back to the Indian Premier League after a 2-year suspension, and taking the IPL title. The match was over in the 19th over and celebrations began at the Wankhede and in Chennai as Watson finished his most successful IPL season in terms of runs scored, beating the 543 he scored in IPL 2013. Congratulations CSK!

Chennai and Hyderabad were the two teams at the top of the points table and they were the two most deserving to be in the final. On the day, CSK was the better team and they completed a 4-0 record over Sunrisers Hyderabad this season. Brilliant stuff from this champion side. Nine seasons of the IPL. Seven finals. Three titles.
