The Big Bash League (BBL) is the second most popular T20 cricket league around the world after the Indian Premier League (IPL). Started in 2011 by Cricket Australia, it has now grown to become the professional Australian T20 League. The format of the game includes round-robin matches and knockout playoffs.
There are in total eight teams participating in this tournament which include Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. Perth Scorchers have won most titles (3 titles) and are the defending champions of Big Bash League 2017-2018.
Majority of players playing this league are Australian but every popular league includes foreign players. Most foreign player participating in Big Bash League are from England, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand. Indians players are restricted from participating in any league and if they participate they need BCCI approval, so no Indian player in Big Bash.
Prize money
Team finishing fifth in the tournament gets $20,000
Teams Losing Semi-finals get $80,000
The runner-up team gets $260,000
The Champions of the tournament get $450,000
That’s not it. Additional cash increase of $600,000 will go to successful clubs.
It’s a really very popular tournament in Australia and Australians don’t miss a chance to attend their favourite games. Last three years, the tournament has seen a tremendous rise in attendance of fans in the park. Last year average attendance for a match was nearly 30K.
