Roger Federer Beats Marin Cilic to Win Wimbledon 2017 Title

Was the Wimbledon made just for Roger Federer?

Andy Murray was knocked out in the quarter finals, Rafael Nadal was knocked out in the Round of 16, Novak Djokovic retired hurt and was eliminated in the quarter finals, which made it very easy for Roger Federer to progress to the Wimbledon 2017 final.

Before the game began, support was pouring in on social media for both the finalists – Roger Federer and Marin Cilic, seeded 3 and 7 respectively in this tournament. We at Read Scoops bring you the best tweets from the Men’s Singles final:

The game began with Federer winning the toss and choosing to receive. Cilic’s first service game went to deuce but he held on, while Federer’s first service game was the same. The start was nervy for both players and until 2-2, it was high intensity tennis by both. However, RF started serving and returning well, breaking Cilic twice to take the first set 6-3.

The second set was even easier for Roger as he was making the Croatian Cilic run around the court, eventually taking the second set 6-1, after which Cilic took a medical time to nurse his injured foot. Sad that he had to be injured for the biggest match up for his life!

Even though most thought the 35-year old was past his time, he made it through to the Wimbledon 2017 finals without having dropped a single set. Nothing changed in this game either, as he won the final in straight sets, taking the third set 6-4 and finishing it off with an ace. What a performer!

At the start of this year, Federer was looking good as he rolled back the years and won the 2017 Australian Open, his first Grand Slam title since 2012 – a gap of 5 long years. Coming into this tournament too, he was tied with Pete Sampras for the most number of Wimbledon title (7) but he broke that record, winning here after 5 years too!

They say Federer is like wine, getting better with age 😉

The Champion has truly become a Legend!

However, lets not take anything away from Marin Cilic, who had a brilliant tournament and battled hard in the final as well, even though he was playing with an injury. Keep an eye on our Sports Scoops segment for similar content!
