Australian Open 2018 – Day 1 Results (Venus Williams Out)

The first day of the main draw of the 2018 Australian Open is done and we were treated to some great action on the first day, which also led to a few shocking exits:

Last year’s finalist and #5 seed this year, Venus Williams, was ousted by Belinda Bencic in straight sets. Ladies #13 seed Sloane Stephens also had a bad start to the year, being shown the door by Shuai Zhang. The third seeded woman to be knocked out on the opening day was USA’s Coco Vandeweghe, who lost in straight sets to the unseeded Timea Babos. #2 seeded Cibulkova was also sent packing today.

Another couple of surprise exits were seen in the men’s tournament when American and #16 seed John Isner was beaten by the home boy Matthew Ebden in a 4-set contest. It wasn’t a good day for USA tennis fans as #8 seed Jack Sock also had to pack his bags for home, losing in 4 sets to Yuichi Sugita. #11 seed Kevin Anderson, #18 seed Lucas Pouille and #27 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber were also eliminated.
