Dominic Thiem Takes on Novak Djokovic in French Open Quarters

Former world number 1 Novak Djokovic may have lost some steam in the last year or so, having not won a grand slam in exactly a year. He won the 2016 French Open in a 4-set encounter against Andy Murray, who is now the world’s top ranked tennis player. Now, Novak is seeded second in this tournament.

Djokovic hasn’t won a grand slam since a year but he is the defending champion and has many years of experience over his opponent Dominic Thiem. Austrian 23-year old Thiem has age over his 3-year old opponent and he has also been getting better over the past couple of years.

The last time these two met in a Grand Slam was in the 2016 Roland Garros, where Novak beat Dominic 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the semi final. Novak has won all of their 5 past encounters but this is the first time we at Read Scoops feel Dominic is indeed in with a chance.

The road to the quarters has been easier for Thiem though, having not dropped a single set as yet in this tournament, and also beating one seeded player so far. On the other hand, Djokovic has also ousted a seeded player but he had a 5-setter against Diego Schwartzman.

Djoker is a much more accomplished player but we have a strong feeling that this could be a Thiem victory, or atleast a 4 or 5 set game, compared to the straight set victory in their meeting in last year’s semi final. Stay tuned tonight at 7pm IST for this big game, and watch our Sports Scoops section for more French Open previews and highlights.
