Maria Sharapova Involved in Indian Housing Scam

It seems like Maria Sharapova’s problems are getting worse by the day. Just a couple of months after she returned from a doping ban and made her comeback, Maria has found herself in the middle of yet another controversy – this time in India.

Apparently, there was a luxury housing project based in Gurgaon that collapsed and Sharapova heavily endorsed this brand. The company behind the development of this project is said to have taken millions of dollars from customers, before shutting shop and closing the project.

Homestead Infrastructure Development is the name of the company on whom criminal charges have been filed. Maria, a 5-time Grand Slam champion, travelled to India in 2012 to launch this luxury project, which was later named as ‘Ballet by Sharapova’.

The website of the project has quoted Maria as saying this “My goal is to make the owners feel like they own something special and different.” Home owners would not have invested so much money into the project if it was not endorsed by this superstar and hence she is a party to the scam.

After a 15-month doping ban, the 30-year old now faces this huge issue, wherein an FIR has been filed against her on grounds of cheating and criminal conspiracy. Piyush Singh is a lawyer representing one of the buyers and he has given out most of the required details in this story.

The luxury complex was supposed to house a tennis academy and also a helipad. However, after launch in 2012 and after a few years of collecting money from home buyers, the Gurgaon (now Gurugram) project was abandoned by the builders in 2016.

We now have a lot of angry home buyers. And their anger is all directed towards Sharapova. Will she escape criminal charges? Will this affect her career? I certainly hope not, as she has already had a very hard year and a half coming into this controversy.
